What to expect

Your Laser & IPL/BBL Photorejuvenation visit

  1. Assessment and skin typing

We determine your Fitzpatrick type, examine pigment under magnification to distinguish sun damage from melasma, and review medication and recent sun exposure.

  2. Test patch where indicated

For deeper skin tones, uncertain pigment or first-time treatment, we test a small discreet area and review it before treating a whole face.

  3. Treatment

Protective eyewear for everyone in the room, cool gel where required, then passes across the area. Contact cooling keeps it tolerable; most patients describe brief hot snaps.

  4. Recovery and course

Pigment typically darkens before flaking away over a week — expected, not a problem. We space sessions four weeks apart and reassess as we go rather than pre-selling a fixed course.

The science

Why it works

Light-based treatment works on the principle of selective photothermolysis — a chosen wavelength is absorbed preferentially by a specific target, heating and destroying it while leaving surrounding tissue largely intact. Brown sun spots absorb one range, the haemoglobin in dilated vessels another, hair pigment another again. This is why one device cannot sensibly do everything, and why an honest assessment precedes any treatment here.

Intense pulsed light and broadband light are not lasers but filtered broad-spectrum light, which makes them well suited to diffuse problems spread across an area — the mottled sun damage on a décolletage, or the background flush of rosacea. True lasers emit a single wavelength and are more precise, which suits discrete targets: an individual vessel, a specific pigmented lesion, or fractional resurfacing of texture and scarring.

We are cautious in two situations, and we will tell you plainly. Melasma is frequently worsened by heat, so treating it with IPL can produce a brief improvement followed by a darker rebound; we usually treat it topically and with gentler modalities instead. And richly pigmented skin carries genuine risk with light-based devices, because the melanin in the skin competes for the energy. For deeper skin tones we select longer wavelengths, treat conservatively, or recommend an entirely different approach.

Questions

Laser & IPL/BBL Photorejuvenation questions

It depends on your tone and the device. Light-based treatment carries a real risk of burns and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in richly pigmented skin, because melanin absorbs the energy. For deeper tones we choose longer wavelengths, use conservative settings with test patching, or recommend microneedling or topical therapy instead. We would rather decline than risk marking your skin.
